Welcome

Four years ago, I set off to college not knowing a single thing about cooking. Around the same time, I also decided to become a vegetarian. My first attempts in the kitchen resulted in rubbery tofu, overcooked pasta, and many, many smoke detector incidents.

While learning about theatre, art, and design by day, by night I slowly learned how to make vegetarian dishes that were flavorful, healthy, and usually don't alert the fire department. I'm now proud to say I can successfully roast my own vegetables, work with phyllo, and occasionally throw a decent dinner party. I even grow my own herbs! I would have never recognized this woman four years ago.

My kitchen philosophy is that food should be healthy, vegetarian (well, in my house anyway), delicious, but not ridiculously expensive or time consuming. I'm not quite "semi-homemade," but I occasionally cut corners, usually in the name of saving time or money.  Also, I'm not really into following long, complicated recipes, and I'm a huge fan of improvising and substituting. I hardly ever make the same dish twice exactly the same way. For me, that's what makes being in the kitchen so exciting.

I hope this blog provides inspiration to those fledgling vegetarians out there who want to stop eating every meal out of a box, or only having a handful of meals they know how to prepare. Trust me, you can make healthy, flavorful food without breaking the bank (although I am thrifty, I do admit that I am guilty of splurging on the occasional half-pound of really expensive cheese or freshly roasted organic fair-trade coffee...)

Look out for some tantalizing photos, recipes, and tips in my upcoming posts! I hope you enjoy the journey!
